If you’re unhappy with the appearance of a scar, you might wonder what scar resurfacing can do for you. Scar resurfacing refers to a group of treatments designed to reduce the appearance of scar tissue, so your skin appears smoother and more even.
Our team of experts 一 Kelly DiStefano, MD; Wendy Champey, MD; and Ed Champey, MD 一 offers scar resurfacing treatments here at Wellington Rejuvenation Center.
Here’s what you need to know as you prepare for your session.
Know what procedure you’re having
How you prepare for your scar resurfacing depends on what type of procedure you are having. Here at our Royal Palm Beach, Florida, office, our team offers several types of scar resurfacing, including laser resurfacing and microneedling.
During your aesthetic medicine consultation, Dr. DiStefano, Dr. Wendy Champey, or Dr. Ed Champey reviews these options with you and recommends the right one based on your scar.
How to prepare for laser scar resurfacing
If you opt for laser scar resurfacing, our team uses LaseMD Ultra™ technology to reduce the appearance of your scar. To make the most out of your treatment, there are a few things you can do to prepare:
- Stop smoking at least two weeks prior to your laser treatment
- Share a list of all vitamins, supplements, and medications that you take (especially ones that thin your blood) with your Wellington Rejuvenation Center provider
- Adjust or stop vitamins and supplements before your appointment but only if directed to do so by our team
- Avoid products with retinol or glycolic acid for 2 to 4 weeks before your appointment
- Avoid excessive UV exposure, including tanning beds and sun lamps
These are general preparation tips. Know that our team provides you with a specific list of preparation instructions for you. If you have any questions about what you need to do to prepare, don’t hesitate to ask!
How to prepare for microneedling
Microneedling for scar resurfacing combines the power of microneedles with the power of radiofrequency energy to help stimulate collagen production and new cell growth. To prepare for microneedling, you may need to:
- Avoid products that increase your skin’s sensitivity, such as exfoliants and retinoids
- Review all supplements, vitamins, and medications with our team
- Adjust medications as directed
- Refrain from putting any products on your skin on the day of your treatment
Again, these are general preparation tips. Our team provides you with specific instructions based on where your scar is and what (if any) supplements you need to adjust.
Prioritize healthy habits
Regardless of whether you’re getting ready for microneedling or laser scar resurfacing, your skin will benefit from healthy habits. Stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, and get sufficient sleep. These factors play a role in your skin’s overall resilience both now and as you recover.
Helping your skin heal
Regardless of which type of laser resurfacing treatment you receive, you’ll need to help your skin heal afterward. It’s normal to experience temporary side effects, such as redness or tenderness. Follow all of your post-treatment instructions, which may include topical serums or other medications.
It’s important to keep your skin clean as it heals. For laser-treated areas, you may need to apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is an emollient that acts as a protective barrier as your skin heals.
