Kybella® is an FDA-approved injection that permanently removes unwanted fat from your submental area — that sometimes fat-heavy spot under your chin. This makes Kybella the first (and only) non-surgical injection to combat the dreaded double chin.
While the thought of banishing your double chin without surgery or incisions is exciting, it’s not uncommon if the thought of injections under your chin leaves you feeling a little jittery.
Our team of experts 一 Kelly DiStefano, MD; Wendy Champey, MD; and Ed Champey, MD 一 want you to know that you’re not alone in these thoughts. If you’re curious about Kybella, don’t hesitate to let us know. Sometimes, just learning more about the process is enough to reduce fear of the unknown.
In the spirit of awareness, here’s what you can expect from Kybella injections here at Wellington Rejuvenation Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
What to expect before your Kybella injections
Before your Kybella treatment, you’ll need to schedule a one-on-one consultation with your Wellington Rejuvenation Center provider. This is the perfect time to discuss your goals, address any concerns, and ensure that Kybella is the appropriate solution for your aesthetic needs.
Be prepared to answer questions about your medical history, including any allergies or previous reactions to injectable treatments.
What to expect during your treatment
During your appointment, you can expect:
Topical numbing application
To ensure your treatment doesn’t cause discomfort, we may numb the treatment area with a topical anesthetic. This way you should remain comfortable during the procedure.
Targeted injections
Kybella is administered through a series of targeted injections beneath your chin. The number of injections depends on the amount of submental fat and your desired outcome. Generally, treatment lasts around 15 to 20 minutes.
You may experience a sensation of pressure or mild discomfort during the injections. This is normal and temporary, and the numbing agent helps mitigate any serious discomfort.
Tip: if you’re nervous about the injection, consider using relaxation techniques during the procedure. Visualization and deep breathing can help lower your stress levels and help you feel more relaxed.
What to expect after you get Kybella
If you’re feeling nervous about post-Kybella swelling, it’s important to know that swelling is common and to be expected. This is a natural response as your body begins to break down and eliminate the targeted fat cells. In other words, focus on the good the swelling does ー it’s a sign that Kybella is working and your double chin is on its way out!
Still, swelling can be uncomfortable, so remember these side effects are usually temporary and subside over the days after treatment. Apply a cold compress to your chin to help minimize swelling and ease any discomfort. You may be advised to avoid strenuous activities for a few days after your treatment.
Other tips to reduce swelling and pain include wearing a soft neoprene chin strap for post-treatment compression and taking over-the-counter pain medication.
